Logan's story begins when he was born 17 weeks premature weighing only 1lb 4.9oz. Logan required many supports at birth and had several blood transfusions. His skin and lungs were not developed, his eyes were fused together, his veins were too small to get nutrients, and he was placed on a ventilator to help him breathe. He was given a 10% chance of surviving.
On Logan's second day of life, he developed level
3 bilateral brain bleeds. I was called to the NICU where I was told he would be deaf, blind, and severely handicapped. I was told his situation would not get better....... only worse. In that moment, all the hope I had for Logan having a quality life was shattered. We were guided as how to take him off life support. I was told I could have anyone with me I wanted and I could hold him until he passed away.
The next few days were a blur as I disengaged from Logan. The time I did spend with him was me saying goodbye. Thankfully, the next doctor I saw had a different philosophy. He said, "When we are no longer doing things for Logan but instead doing things to Logan, we will have the hard conversation but now was not that time." In that moment I felt my hope being restored. I reengaged and became a vital part of Logan's team. The rest of our NICU journey was full of ups and downs and many close calls but after 113 days I was able to take my tiny miracle home!
Today, we have our challenges, but Logan's full of life and love. He especially loves singing, dancing and telling jokes.
All my best,
